Robert Wayne Soares Jr., 35, of Papaikou died July 2 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was a truck driver and mechanic and a member of Heritage Christian Fellowship.

Ernesto Combes

Ernesto Cacho Combes, 43, of Pahoa, died July 11 at Hilo Medical Center. Born Feb. 4, 1968, in Pagasinan, Philippines, he was a factory worker for Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Co.

Friends may call at 5 p.m. July 28, 2011 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 6 p.m. service. An all-night vigil follows at the family residence in Pahoa. Friends also may call at 10 a.m. July 29 at Homelani Memorial Park (Ilima Section) for a service. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by fiancee, Cathy Balicoco, of Pahoa; sons, Edgar (Tiana) Agonias, Richard (Casey) Mendoza, Christopher Mendoza, all of Pahoa; mother, Mercedes Combes, of Philippines; brothers, Federico (Epifania) Combes Sr., of Keaau, Gaudencio Combes, Romy (Myrna) Jacobe, both of Philippines; sister, Primitiva (Gaudencio) Bibay, of Philippines; three grandchildren; numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Kenneth Susumu Kanda, 77, of Hilo, formerly of Honolulu, died July 14 at home. Born in Hilo, he was a retired insurance agent/salesman, a member of Puna Hongwanji Mission, Lincoln Wreckers and was a Korean War Army veteran.

He is survived by wife, Kinue Kanda, of Hilo; brother, Henry (Karen) Kanda, of Kaneohe, Oahu; sister, Mitsuko Sato, of Osaka, Japan; numerous nieces and nephews.

Harriet Kawaakoa

Harriet Leonaona Kawaakoa, 79, of Hilo, died July 12 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honolulu, she was a retired counselor with the community relations division of the Honolulu Police Department, a former staff counselor for Job Corp., a crossing guard for Hawaii County of Hawaii and member of the Waiakea Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. July 30 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for an 11 a.m. service. A potluck luncheon will follow at 1 p.m. at Wailoa State Park. Family requests casual attire be worn and flowers omitted

Grayson Andaya

Grayson "Tola" Edward Kekoa Wence Andaya, 18, of Waimea, died July 13 at The Queen's Medical Center on Oahu. Born Dec. 10, 1992, in Dallas, Ore., he was a courtesy clerk for KTA Super Stores in Waimea, a Honokaa High School graduate, volleyball player and sandslider.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. July 30 at Imiola Congregational Church for an 11 a.m. service at 11 a.m. Cremation follows. Family requests casual attire be worn.

McKinley Kaleihiano Kaupu Davis Sr., 88, of Pahala, formerly of Opihihale, died June 29 at home. Born in Honolulu, he was a former ranch hand, a retired cane truck driver and heavy equipment operator with the former Ka'u Sugar Co. and member of the Naalehu Assembly of God Church.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. July 30 at the Naalehu Assembly of God Church for a 10 a.m. service. Friends may also call at 1 p.m. July 31 at the Waimea County Cemetery for service. Family requests casual attire be worn.

Manuel Gutierres

Manuel Gutierres, 83, of Kohala, died July 19 at Kohala Hospital. Born Feb. 20, 1928, in Kohala, he was retired from Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and a member of Hawi Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Kohala Puerto Rican Social Club.

Friends may call at 8 a.m. July 30 at Hawi Sacred Heart Catholic Church for a 10 a.m. Mass. Burial follows in the church cemetery. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by daughters, Cynthia (Eugene) Amar, Rosemary (Jeffrey) Yamamoto, Priscilla (Ralph) Galan, all of Kohala; sons, Anthony Gutierres, of Waimea, Kelvin (Patricia) Gutierres, of Kentucky, Gilbert (Faye) Gutierres, of Kohala; brothers, Gary (Leatrice) Gutierres, of San Francisco, Joseph Gutierres, of Hayward, Calif.; sister, Helen (James) Ortiz, of Honolulu; 25 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Richard Umeno

Richard Kazuo Umeno, 97, of Hilo, died July 13 at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born July 11, 1914, in Keaau, he was employed as a bookkeeper for the former Bevway Corp. in Hilo and member of the Hilo Hooganji Mission, Lower Kawailani Kumiai and Fukuoka Kenjinkai.

Private services were held. Family requests flowers and monetary donations be omitted.

He is survived by sons, Douglas Umeno, of Hilo, Dennis (Shirlyn) Umeno, of Kona; daughters, Patricia (William) Ah Sing, Irma (Michael Udovic) Imai, Lois (Chester) Wakida, all of Hilo; sister, Fujie Murakami, of California; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; numerous nephews and nieces.
